As if the Pagoda was not enough to take my breath away then more splendour but this time in the form of delicious food and traditional dancing was to come. Today the Governor’s Residence is a ‘boutique’ hotel run by the Oriental Express Group. We were seated at grand tables in the verdant garden with a nearly full moon and stars overhead and a gentle breeze wafting the brilliant white table clothes.
The buffet was outstanding with 3 choices of soup – I had red lentil, an amazing array of salads making the best of local produce and fruits, some 6 different curries with pork, duck and the one I enjoyed most - soft-shelled crab – and then as I had experience in India an array of sweetmeats and desserts of all kinds.
While we ate we were entertained with elegant and graceful dancing to the sound of a traditional band – all very colourful and not without its comedy – see the photos of the dancing puppet and the final one of the two dancers having a ‘tiff’. The dancing was not so stylised as I had seen in China and very entertaining.
So ended a wonderful introduction to Myanmar with more to come tomorrow with a visit to Bago.
