Yet another early start and I was seriously tired from the long day in Bago and thought twice about venturing out again this morning but having dragged myself up to the Neptune Lounge I met with two great friends from my Round Africa cruise in 2013 and decided if they were game then so should I be.
Thanliyn was once a major port and trading centre and lies behind the commercial dock at which we were berthed. From 1600 to 1613 Thanliyn (Then known as Syriam) was a base for the Portuguese adventurer Felipe de Brito. He was quickly followed by East India Company and by 1647 Syriam had developed into a trading post with a Dutch, French and British presence.
The town flourished until destroyed by King Alaungapya in 1756 and when Britain annexed the southern half of Myanmar some 96 years later it was Yangon that became the main trading post in the area.
Today the oil industry and brewing are the main industries but we saw a huge area that is being prepared for a new industrial estate with massive investment by the Japanese.
It was not a long journey to reach our first destination and a short ride on local horse and carts. Did I say short, if you blinked you would have missed it since we only trotted some 200 metres down the road, turned round and drew up outside the Market!
