To my great delight I was allocated ‘Seat Two’ generally recognised to be the best viewing position other than that of the pilot in the helicopter. You can see by the grin on my face in the picture how pleased and excited I was. The seat allocation is calculated by computer to balance the aircraft so all fair and square but it didn’t stop one member of our flight from complaining bitterly that he had been allocated a seat in the middle of the four who sit in the rear of the aircraft.
Having met Jeremy, our pilot from California, and a Blue Badge qualified Hawaiian guide we were soon in the air and tilting forward at 100 mph – like the aircraft in the photo – as we swooped into the sky. If you get to watch the DVD of the flight that I bought you will see me mouth the word “Wow!!!”.
We headed first to the south of the island and indeed the newest part of the island created from lava flows from the second and less active volcano on the island Mauna Loa. I should make it clear the outset that the volcanic eruptions on Hawai’i are not explosive, there is not enough pressure. The lava flows from ‘Puhi’ (Blowholes) and mainly moves below the surface in lava tubes but as I will show you the lava flows can be seen from the air.
