Monday 10th March 2014 -10 Hours GMT - Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii, USA: Sacred Falls, ³Jurassic² Park & Pineapple Mazes

We next headed through the Kolkole Pass, one of the routes used by the 350 Japanese warplanes in the attack on Pearl Harbour in 1941.  The other main line of attack was from the north side of the island through the peaks of the Jurassic Park area.  Some 90 plus naval vessels were in Pearl Harbour at the time of which 19 were sunk, destroyed or badly damaged.  Over a hundred Japanese warplanes didn’t make it back to their carriers.

Pearl Harbour is still a major naval base and it is only recently that the ban on aircraft flying over the base following “9/11” has ben lifted and I must admit it was a spectacular approach.

The first photo shows the Arizona Memorial, a bright and airy structure built across the width of the U.S.S Arizona one of the 19 ships bombed on the infamous December morning.  Although the camera has not detected it form the air the massive ship can be seen below the water from inside the Memorial as well as the American Flag that flies at half-mast form tis severed main mast that protrudes form the Pacific Ocean. The Memorial also house a white marble wall carved with the names of the 1,178 young men who lost their lives on the ship.

The second photo shows the U.S.S Missouri another ship badly damaged in the attack but now restored as a Museum.
