Monday 10th March 2014 -10 Hours GMT - Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii, USA: Sacred Falls, ³Jurassic² Park & Pineapple Mazes

Rounding the eastern tip of the island the rugged north shore on the windward side of the island came into view and so did the rain cloud – see first photo.

All the Hawaiian islands get huge amounts of rain but rainfall levels vary greatly around each island with some very dry areas and some of the volcanic mountain summits getting up to 40 feet of rain a year!!  So lots of lush tropical rain forest, not so much on Oahu but on Kauai and Hilo our next two destinations.

One of the key constraints to development of the islands is the dependency on diesel-generated electricity.  To overcome this there are extensive plans to develop hydro-electric, solar and wind power and in the case of Kauai – tomorrows destination – to burn the many non native species of trees as an additional source of power.

We flew on to “Jurassic Valley” where scenes from many major movies have been filmed (Photo 2) to the Sacred Falls, a shear drop of 1,000 feet and pretty scary being so close to the peaks with a rotor whizzing around above your head!!

Next came the Dole Pineapple Maze, pineapples being a major product of this island.  Sadly the photo doesn’t quite show the maze – the flypast was just too quick!
