I took these photos yesterday afternoon in brilliant sunshine as we cruised the Hawaiian Ridge en route to Honolulu on Monday 10th March. As I write it is Sunday 9th March at 14.30 our time 00.30 on Monday 10th March in the UK.
The birds are Red Footed Boobies and were hanging in the updraft created by the ship’s bow and bridge. Wonderful to watch their easy graceful flight especially against a nascent Moon, occasionally dipping in unions as one bird spotted some possible food in the churned up sea.
We are coming to the end of our 3,900-mile voyage across the North Pacific. The weather has been mostly cloudy apart from yesterday when we had clear blue skies. No such luck today: my afternoon sea watch with the camera has been rudely interrupted by a heavy rainsquall. Perhaps it will clear for the sunset watch.
We will be arriving early into Honolulu at 3.00am tomorrow because of a medical emergency but will then have the whole day to explore until 11.00pm when we make the short voyage to the neighbouring Hawaiian island of Kuaia and the port of Nawiliwili. I am taking helicopter rides in both islands so I hope the weather improves.
I gather Spring has arrived in the UK.
Next blog postings may well not be until 13th March since the next three days in Hawaii are going to be busy.
