If Honolulu was a disappointment then the island of Kauai was a real delight with lush green rolling countryside and a canyon to rival the Grand Canyon.
Overnight we had sailed back to the northwest to the outer edge of the Hawaiian Islands across the Kauai Channel from Oahu to the lyrical sounding port of Nawiliwili that lies just to the south of the capital Lihue (See map photo).
It was a beautiful sunny morning as we docked in the tiny harbour and I was soon off the ship and on the bus for my excursion this morning to the Weimea Canyon and Spouting Horn. Even our bus driver/guide was called “Sunny” and we left in a buoyant mood only for the bus to breakdown a mil outside the port! The automatic transmission had become stuck in first gear. Luckily we were close to the depot and within 15 minutes a replacement bus arrived. In the scramble to chance busses I found myself last to board the replacement and for a few seconds my heart stopped since I realised it was a smaller bus and no seat was to be found, or so I thought, but then I heard our escort say there is a seat at the front!! So for the first time in many bus rides I had the perfect front seat and thoroughly enjoyed the rest the excursion well once I had dealt with a miserable passenger behind who claimed that he had sat there on the previous bus! I just pointed out that I was last on the bus and he had every opportunity to take the front seat. Then the lady sitting next to me said, “Thank goodness you are sitting here now. He was driving me mad with his moans and groans”. There is just no pleasing some people. Sometimes the battles for front seats on these tours are worse than disputes about seats on commuter trains!!
Enough ranting, let me introduce to the delights of Kauai in the next posting.
