Our next visit was to the beautiful south shore of the island known as Poìpu and to the Ka ala hele waiwai ho ōilina o Kolōa or Kolōa Heritage Trail in search of the Puhi or blowhole. Today this natural blowhole is know as the Spouting Horn and was called puhi by early Haawaiians. Legends tell of a huge mo’o or lizard caught in this Puhi that was formed when waves eroded softer, underlying rock and wore through the harder top rock. Water rushing into the holes is forced through the narrow opening and shoots skywards.
Today the sea was relatively calm but the spout was still reaching 20 feet or more in height. When the waves are stronger the spout can reach up to 60 feet.
The coastline was truly magnificent especially in the strong sunlight of the early afternoon.
